[Synthetic Organic ElectroSynthesis] - Electrosynthesis of pharmaceuticals coupled to the production of Green Hydrogen (EU Funded Project)

Department of Pharmaceutical, Chemical and Environmental Sciences

About the Project

Funding note: The grant will cover the Home (UK and Ireland) tuition fees and offer a stipend in line with UKRI. Non-UK/IE applicants are welcome, but funding will cover only the tuition fees, and the international applicant will have to secure additional funding to cover their living expenses.

About the Project

The project is part of a unique consortium of International partners: University of Turku (Fin), Aalto University (Fin), Nordic Bioproducts Group (Fin), Aarhus University (DK), University of Limerick (IE), University of Greenwich (UK), and Lancaster University (UK).

The project will develop a proof-of-concept and innovative platform demonstrating the electrosynthesis of high-value organic compounds (pharmaceuticals) can be coupled to electricity storage and green hydrogen production.

In this project, our group will be designing and developing organic reactions for the anodic pole of the dual flow cell. We plan on the preparation of highly valuable pharmaceutical compounds.

We are now looking for highly motivated PhD students to join our team and further explore the synthetic potential of organic electrosynthesis.

The candidate:

The projects would be suitable for a student with a strong background in synthetic chemistry and an interest in electrochemistry.

The Student will be supervised by Dr Kevin Lam (http://www.lamresearchgroup.com) and join a group of young, international and dynamic researchers!

The Laboratory:

The Lam Group is housed within a newly refurbished laboratory and is very well equipped with more than 14 Electrasyns 2.0, an electrochemical flow system, a glovebox, a solvent purification system, several automatic chromatography columns, its own GC-MS and HPLC-MS, etc.

The university will also provide the student with routine access to 4 NMR spectrometers, several UPLC-MS, a high-resolution mass spectrometer, MALDI-TOF, etc.
