Pancreatic cancer is associated with poor prognosis and substantial rates of mortality. The need for new treatment options is therefore of utmost importance.
A common characteristic, and challenge for cancer cells is the ability to acquire nutrients to fuel bioenergetic and biosynthetic demands under conditions of nutrient scarcity. This is achieved by metabolic reprogramming and is a fundamental way cancer cells ensure growth and survival.
The project will investigate aspects of lipid metabolism in a number of pancreatic cell lines. The project will extend investigations carried out by the group into alterations to lipid metabolism, one of the most important modifications in cancer cell metabolism, as a mechanism for enhancing cancer cell proliferation. Metabolic investigations will utilise a combination of stable isotopic and molecular techniques to characterise and determine how pancreatic cancer cells adapt their metabolism to enable cell survival under conditions of nutrient stress.
Applicants should have a strong background in biochemistry, and should preferably have some experience in cell culture and western blotting techniques.
