Project Description

Strategies and Resources for supporting online learning for Teachers and Students in reclaiming Aboriginal languages.

Various NSW Aboriginal languages are being reclaimed though collecting material from AIATSIS archival material, linguists and community speakers. We have developed a template website in Python/javascript which has been implemented for some languages, including: history wiki, interactive dictionary, interactive worksheets, tables of grammar examples, links to audio transcriptions, plus all archival text material and audio material that is public. Registration is also available for less public material. Different languages need different support and with a good collection of resources, more support can be given. Existing tools such as Rosetta and DuoLingo are not feasible with a small population of speakers and resources, however some techniques may be emulated. For example working with the Centre of Excellence in the Dynamics of Language and Google, another project is looking at transcribing audio resources in some NT languages which are better resourced. Aspects of language learning, which include immersion in culture and country are also important for teaching online or on mobile. This research is focused on utilising community input to enhance teaching resources and to provide a method of sharing resources between teachers and students in different locations. This is a software development project. We are looking for students with an interest in techniques for teaching and learning and a desire to engage with Aboriginal knowledge from NSW communities. A background in languages and proficiency in grammar would assist.
