About the Project

This project will suit a Physicist, Engineer or Mathematician with a knowledge of scientific programming and an interest in developing novel imaging methods that can be used directly in clinical studies.

The project will be carried out in the new Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE), sited at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, which is one of the largest acute hospitals in the UK. The Imaging Centre houses a new 7-Tesla MRI scanner with superior high-resolution imaging capability compared to standard MRI scanners with lower magnetic field strength. The scanner has been installed in a dedicated research unit at the hospital that allows patient studies to be performed for a wide range of clinical conditions.

The successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team of basic and clinical scientists, who are exploring the application of 7T MRI to a range of diseases, including stroke and cancer. To support these studies, the student will contribute to the development of novel MRI pulse sequences and image reconstruction techniques, which will be optimized for the diseases of interest. The project will also involve the use of advanced acquisition methods that use multiple radiofrequency transmit channels. This part of the project will be carried out in collaboration with radiofrequency engineers, who are part of the research team.

The project will provide opportunities for the student to participate in international collaborations with Siemens Healthcare and with the Fraunhofer MEVIS Institute in Bremen, Germany.

When applying, please enter the project title above in the programme description box of the online application form.
