About the Project

Dundalk Institute of Technology

Project Description

Keywords: Historic settlement; settlement archaeology; urban development

Termonfeckin, Co. Louth offers an opportunity to trace the development of an Irish village from the earliest times through to the present. The village has several clear stages discernible in its development. Archaeological evidence suggests activity from prehistoric times, but the village originates with the monastery founded in the 7th century by St. Fechin. In medieval times, it was the chief residence of the Archbishops of Armagh. Post Reformation, much land in the area passed to the Church of Ireland and many medieval practices continued.

The objectives of this project are:

1.      Trace the development of Termonfeckin through an analysis of extant archaeological, historical and cartographic and database sources

2.      Trace development through analysis of surviving archaeological and architectural remains – annotated catalogue

3.      Place development in the context of the village’s wider landscape – the natural hinterland

Explore the relationships between Termonfeckin and other Louth towns and villages
