About the Project

Summary of the project

Scabies, caused by an infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei in the skin, is a common, contagious skin disease. A hallmark symptom of scabies is severe and often sleep-disturbing pruritus. Scabies is a major public health problem due to its high impact on morbidity and mortality, largely due to pruritus. The mechanisms causing scabies itch are not fully understood and effective therapy modalities are missing. Anti-histamines have limited effect on scabies itch and corticosteroids exacerbate secondary bacterial infections. There is a great need to explore the mechanisms underlying scabies pruritus and to develop new effective therapies that act rapidly on pruritus.
