About the Project

This is a doctoral research project on the anthropology of cultural heritage. The project will make both empirical and theoretical contributions to the growing sub-discipline of the anthropology of heritage. The research project should be a critical study that investigates how heritage practices, policies, and/or ideologies are shaped by the political, social, cultural and economic conditions in which they develop. The research will be focused on specific archaeological, cultural or museum sites; global or national heritage institutions; specific cultural objects or practices (“tangible or intangible cultural heritage”); cultural and heritage tourism; intellectual and cultural property; the heritage of indigenous or minority groups. Regional specialisation is open to any part of the world, although a proposal that connects with existing regional interests in the School may be prioritised. The primary research method will be ethnographic research, so language proficiency may be an important consideration.

The student will work closely with both Archaeology and Geography & Environmental Science staff within SAGES. Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Alanna Cant; [Email Address Removed]
