About the Project

This funded studentship needs a motivated, ambitious UK registered dietitian or associate registered/registered nutritionist with a drive to apply their clinical nutrition knowledge and skills to their own research. This project addresses an exciting new area of research: the impact of diet on skin conditions, specifically the inflammatory skin disease, psoriasis. The APPLE Study (Asking People with Psoriasis about their Lifestyle and Eating) aims to address one of the commonest questions that people living with psoriasis ask: whether changes in diet could be helpful for their skin. As psoriasis is strongly linked to cardiovascular disease, providing evidence-based dietary guidance is a key priority.

This PhD project aims to address this unmet need by firstly, examining the current diet patterns of people living with psoriasis around the UK, in addition to lifestyle factors such as sleep and exercise. Associations between diet and severity of psoriasis will be investigated. Secondly, a dietary intervention trial will investigate the efficacy of the Mediterranean diet in combination with time-restricted eating in improving psoriasis and risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Circulating inflammatory markers will be measured at the beginning and end of the study. The study brings together a unique group of UK experts in dermatology and nutrition. The PhD candidate will be a registered dietitian or associate registered/registered nutritionist who, at the end of the study, will gain experience in a range of research techniques including clinical trial and laboratory techniques. They will also develop expertise in the specific needs and challenges faced by people living with skin conditions, providing a unique niche for further clinical and/or academic roles.
