The application of Blockchain in Finance - Investigating the impact of the blockchain on the finance systems (such as banking system, smart contract, Cryptocurrency)

Project Description

Blockchain is a revolution in systems of record -- history’s first permanent, decentralized, global, trustless ledger of records that may reshape the future digital economy and transform society due to its extensive applications such as cryptocurrency, decentralized exchanges and distributed cloud storage, digital identity, digital voting and smart contract, etc. Thanks to various cryptography algorithms and consensus mechanisms to guarantee the records in the database, it’s extremely difficult for any single party to tamper or delete the records in the chain as they are correlated to every transaction record. In this project, the impact of the blockchain on the finance systems (such as banking system, smart contract, Cryptocurrency) will be investigated. E.g., blockchain has a potential to serve as an infrastructure for cross-border transactions which enables the financial institutions to create direct links between each other, avoiding correspondent banking.

I hence invite PhD candidates who have strong computer science background and have strong willingness to apply his/her big data/blockchain technique skills to the area of banking, finance and broad economics. The proposal should identify the impact of blockchain system on financial transactions specifically, and the real economy in general.

Successful candidate will join a team of researchers who are working on a wide range of interesting topics including FinTech, digital economy, financial regulation and systemic risk, and firm’s financing behaviour, etc.

Applicants interested in this research project should submit a more detailed research proposal (of a maximum of 2000 words)

Funding Notes

This project is funded by a University of Aberdeen Elphinstone Scholarship. An Elphinstone Scholarship covers the cost of tuition fees, whether Home, EU or Overseas. Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit.
