About the Project

UK self-employed parents are often excluded from statutory family friendly policies designed to support families with children. This can represent yet another burden on a group, who already face multiple barriers to sustainable and well-paid work. This can negatively affect work-life balance, mental health and even lead to the collapse of a fledgling enterprise. This research would explore the influence of current statutory family friendly policies on female entrepreneurs and the ways these women navigate these policies and develop their working arrangements in order to sustain a family life. The research seeks to understand how the support/ or lack of it available within the first-year post-birth influences working habits and child caring between a couple where at least one is a self-employed entrepreneur.
