About the Project

1 in 4 children and young people in the UK have a parent with a diagnosis of depression. This project aims to identify the reasons why children with a depressed parent may develop depression themselves (inter-generational transmission). A major limitation of many observational studies is that they fail to utilize research designs that allow the testing of causal effects. This is problematic because only interventions that target causal factors are effective and interventions that target non-causal effects can be ineffective and mean that limited resources are wasted. This PhD project aims to generate new knowledge about the potentially causal processes involved in the inter-generational transmission of depression. It will use a combination of data sets to address this question focusing on research designs that permit causal inference including longitudinal data from a sample of parents with a history of depression and their children, genetically-informed research designs, and a randomized controlled trial design. This information can help inform the development of more effective preventive interventions.
