About the Project

Violence against children is often hidden, unreported or unrecorded by governments’ administrative data systems, and the impact of COVID-19 and recent lockdowns has also likely exacerbated this global problem. Gaps in knowledge prevent the formation of sound public health responses to reduce lifelong disease and economic burden resulting from exposure to violence. Although studies have looked at bullying in childhood and adolescence and child maltreatment independently, a national study of the prevalence, nature, and societal and economic consequences of the full impact of violence against children in the UK has not yet been conducted. The proposed project aims to understand causal pathways, the contribution of violence related risk factors to the development of physical and mental health disorders, and how different forms of violence against children interact. The proposed research will also investigate the consequences of multiple forms of violence against children and health, education, employment and other adverse outcomes across the lifecourse using multiple data sources to estimate attributable disease burden and economic costs. This study will inform strategies for prevention, for a whole-system multi-agency approach to violence against children, and can enable monitoring of future progress in reducing violence against children and its burden in the UK.
