The definition of an Architect. Professional identity in a changing world and the role of the architect in the future

Project Description

What it means to be an architect is highly contested. What kinds of professionals are needed to face the challenges of the 21st century? This PhD would develop research already undertaken in two AHRC funded research projects ’The Cultural Value of Architects in Homes and Neighbourhoods’ and ’Evidencing and Communicating the Value of Architects’ and will utilise and develop a framework, developed in the course of those projects, to describe the knowledge and skills of architects and to speculate on the role of the architect in the future.

Applications are invited from practitioners and others interested in exploring what it means to be an architect now. What do architects do? How might they be educated? What is the relevance of professional institutions? Is it necessary to be ethical to be professional? What is the impact of technology on the profession? What kinds of professional aptitudes are needed for future resilience? What can be done to make the profession more inclusive? What are the research methodologies of architects? How do architectural ideas of what is good align with those in other fields? How do conceptions of practice vary across the globe and why? What can we learn from the history of architecture to help the profession go forward? Is the profession ’architect’ set to become irrelevant in favour of other hybrid forms of expertise? The School of Architecture at Reading which is embedded within the School of Built Environment is an idea environment to explore these and other issues. Additionally the DEGW archive in the Museum of English Rural Life is an excellent resource to start to unpack some of these issues.

Candidates require a first class or 2.1 degree and/or Masters degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject
