Requirements:

The candidate should have a first class or upper second class honours degree, or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, and advanced control.

Evidence of good spoken and written English is essential. The candidate should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, if the first language is not English. This position is open to all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality.

Degree:

The student will be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool (UK) upon successful completion of the program.

Principal Supervisor:

Huiqing Wen is the IEEE senior member and senior associate professor at the XJTLU. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 2002 and 2006, respectively. In 2009, he received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. From 2009 to 2010, he has been an electrical engineer working with the GE (China) Research and Development Center Company, Ltd., Shanghai, China. From 2010 to 2011, he was an engineer at the China Coal Research Institute, Beijing, China. From 2011 to 2012, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In 2013, he joined the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, China.

His research interests include power electronics, renewable energy, electric vehicle, microgrid, and power semiconductor devices. He has hosted more than 20 competitively funded research projects, including NSFC, Jiangsu Science Research Programme, Suzhou Prospective Application programme, University-level projects, and industry projects. The total funding as the principle investigator has already over 4 million RMB. He has published more than 180 peer reviewed technical papers, including over 90 SCI-indexed international journals (over 40 IEEE transaction papers) and 90 EI-indexed conference articles. He is the associate editor of IEEE ACCESS, International Journal of Photoenergy, and Journal of Power Electronics. He served as the program committees in several international conferences, including SGTDP, PEDES, ICRERA, IPEMC, and I&CPS. JITRI co-supervisor:

Changhai Ru received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Harbin University of Commerce, Harbin, China, in 1999 and 2002, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2005.He is a Professor with the Research Center of Robotics and Micro System, Soochow University, Suzhou, China. His research areas include micro robotics and nano-robotic manipulation, nano-positioning technology, and automated instrumentation for biomedical applications.

Funding Notes

This PhD project is a collaborative research project between XJTLU (http://www.xjtlu.edu.cn) in Suzhou and JITRI (Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute) Micro-Nano Automation Institute in Suzhou. The student will be registered as an XJLTU PhD student but is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at the Institute in Suzhou.
