This project focuses on the development of a low weight, low volume portable fuel cell device that can be used either as an APU system for small military vehicles or as a power supply for soldiers’ operation. The aim is to develop an up to 2 kW modular fuel cell systems with capability of continuous operation for up to 24hrs, silent operation and low heat signature. The student will be trained on various fuel cell technologies, the integration and control of electrochemical devices in portable and APU devices, and safety aspects of fuel cell systems and their fuels. The research project will be focused on the stack design, development and testing, and will be in collaboration with another PhD project focusing on the system level. The work will include both experimental and modelling activity. The technology development proposed in this project can be applied for APUs in a wide range of vehicles, namely; aircraft and marine applications. Moreover, the knowhow developed here can be utilised in the development of larger systems for next generation of vehicles’ powertrain. The Project will be conducted in close collaboration with BAE systems.
The PhD candidate will have a degree in chemical or mechanical engineering, and preferably have some experience in CAD design and thermal fluid flow modelling and simulation.
