About the Project

The Falkland Islands Government would like to invite applications for the position of PhD intern (by research) in partnership with the University of Vigo. The intern will be working towards a doctorate degree provisionally titled ‘The ecological role and trophic relations of seasonal cohorts of the Patagonian Squid (Doryteuthis gahi) in the marine ecosystem of the Falkland Islands’. This project will include statolith processing and ageing, stable isotope analysis, stomach content analysis of D. gahi and other species within the trophic web, the production of ecosystem based production models and partaking in research cruises.

The Person
The successful applicant will be required to hold an MSc (Merit or higher) in marine biology, fisheries ecology or a similar biological subject. Previous experience working in a fisheries or zoological laboratory and an understanding of the ecology of cephalopods is essential. The successful applicant should be computer literate, with experience of using programs such as QGIS and R preferred.
We are looking for an individual who has the ability to work on an independent basis and in collaboration with other researchers. The position will require some short periods at sea and travel between Vigo and the Falkland Islands, with the applicant primarily based in the Falkland Islands (working office hours).

The Package
• The appointment will be for a three year contract.
• In addition to salary, benefits include flights at the beginning and end of contract, payment of tuition fees and a research budget for stable isotope analysis.
• Starting salary will be £24,388.
