About the Project

Fully funded 4-year PhD position available in the lab of Dr. Amy Kirkham (amykirkham.ca) in the Graduate Department of Kinesiology at the University of Toronto (Toronto, Canada) for a start date of September 2022.

The University of Toronto is consistently ranked among the world’s best research universities and is located in Canada’s most vibrant and culturally diverse city. The location, size and diversity provide unique opportunities for collaboration and innovation. More information about the graduate program can be found here: https://kpe.utoronto.ca/academics-researchgraduate-studies/phd-kinesiology

The project involves the use of intermittent fasting (time-restricted eating) and/or aerobic exercise to improve a variety of cardiometabolic outcomes in women with breast cancer who have received cardiotoxic treatment. The successful student will be invited to further develop the project and outcomes based on their interest and expertise. Possible outcomes include cardiac and vascular function and structure, skeletal muscle quantity and quality, ectopic adipose tissue, and glucose control. Imaging, especially magnetic resonance and ultrasound are central tools, in addition to blood analysis, biosensors (continuous glucose monitors, physical activity and sleep trackers), cardiopulmonary exercise testing and clinical outcomes.

Students are expected to have experience in human research in clinical or aging populations, and degree(s) in kinesiology, nutrition, physiology, human biology, physical therapy, or related fields. Experience with imaging techniques, especially cardiac (echocardiography or MRI) or vascular (ultrasound) is an asset but not required.

Prospective students can express their interest via the following intake form:
