Project Description:

Do you want to do research on intelligent stormwater management systems in an interdisciplinary perspective? University of Exeter is seeking one PhD student focusing on analysis of sustainable stormwater solutions that integrate industry 4.0 technologies.

You will undertake this work with supervisors from The Centre for Water Systems and the Engineering Entrepreneurship group.

This interdisciplinary research project aims to investigate different scenarios for sustainable stormwater management that might be explored through existing living laboratory projects. You will deploy your critical thinking skills to identify; test; analyse and evaluate novel technologies, and work to develop one or more method / product that fills gaps in the current ecosystem.

Your project supervisors will introduce you to innovators and engineers within water companies, local authorities and product development houses. You will focus your skills (e.g. hardware, software, product design) to assess existing solutions and work to set out new methodologies and approaches that can support a shift towards intelligent stormwater networks. The project will begin with desktop evaluations (year one), progress through the technology readiness levels via laboratory work (year two); living laboratory trials (year three) and set out a commercial proposition around a novel method you develop throughout the programme. Engagement and mentorship from entrepreneurs in residence; business and product development experts; and industry mentors will be provided that supports your chosen project pathway.

Entry Requirements:

This studentship is open to UK and Irish nationals, who if successful in their application will receive a full studentship including payment of university tuition fees at the home fees rate.

Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology.

If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved at least 6.0 in IELTS and no less than 6.0 in any section by the start of the project.
