The Genesis of Volcanic Ash

Project Description

Fine-grained volcanic ash is created during pyroclast collisions within energetic volcanic flows in conduits, jets and pyroclastic density currents. The detailed genesis of volcanic ash during the pyroclast interaction process and the nature of the ash emerging from the collision zone represents the starting point of a potentially long and varied journey to deposition. Little is known about the short timescale processes responsible for ash genesis and this project aims to test the paradigm assumption that ash particles are created as individuals.

This project is linked with, and complementary to, current NERC funded research at Lancaster. The research is experimental in approach, including building of proprietary apparatus and the development of observational techniques. You would be part of a larger network of research into the laboratory and field detection of volcanic ash as well as the opportunity to undertake formal volcanological training through lectures, laboratory and field study.

Funding Notes

Applicants should hold a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in subjects such as Environmental Science, Earth Science/Geology, Physics, Engineering and Physical Geography. A good level of numeracy and a relevant dissertation project demonstrating experimental capability are desirable.

Full studentships (UK/EU tuition fees and stipend (£15,009 2019/20 [tax free])) for UK/EU students for 3.5 years. Unfortunately funding is not available for International (non EU) students.
