We invite applications for a PhD in the area of genomics and rapid adaptation in plants. Our research combines cutting-edge genomic techniques, comparative analyses and experimental approaches to understand how organisms adapt to their environment. A majority of our current research is focused on grasses, the most economically and ecologically important group of plants. We use crops and wild species to investigate three interconnected themes: [1] pan-genome variation and local adaption; [2] the evolutionary consequences of lateral gene transfer; and [3] adaptation within a lifetime through extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA). Students will gain experience in a range of skills in genomics, evolutionary biology and plant science.
The University of Sheffield has state of the art growth facilities, molecular laboratories and high-performance computing resources, all of which will be available to the student. Our research includes lab, field and computer based studies.
