About the Project

Department for Education Funded MPhil/PhD Studentship at the University of Derby - The impact of biophilic school design on educational attainment, wellbeing and sustainable behaviours.

Providing access to quality outdoor spaces has been shown to have a range of benefits, including improving educational outcomes, but this has not been tested widely in a school environment in England. In partnership with the Department for Education this PhD will evaluate the impact of a new build biophilic school in England.

The successful doctoral candidate will evaluate and assess the benefits of biophilic school design, including a robust analysis of the factors that influence outcomes such as educational attainment, teacher and pupil wellbeing and pro-environmental behaviours.

The three year full-time postgraduate research studentship will use objective data from the school, psychometric surveys and focus groups to track the wellbeing and educational outcomes of a pupil cohort from a temporary city centre school to the new biophilic school.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate successful application of a range of psychological methods and the subsequent analysis of data. An ability to think creatively around opportunities for data collection will be welcome. An interest in environmental, educational or developmental psychology will be advantageous. The successful candidate will be confident in sharing the findings and able to contribute to the development of specifications for biophilic schools.

The successful applicant will receive a maintenance stipend (based on the minimum stipend defined by UKRI, currently £15,609 for the academic year 2021/22) and home MPhil/PhD tuition fees only up to the target submission date. Please note, if your application is successful and you are assessed as Overseas for fees purposes, you will need to pay the difference between the Home fees and the EU/Overseas fees.

The intended intake period is January 2022, or the next available intake.

The successful applicant will be expected to complete their MPhil/PhD within three to four years on the MPhil/PhD route, contribute to the College REF submission and get involved in the wider research activities of the College.

Applicants will become part of a friendly and welcoming team and will be supported and managed by their supervisors.
