About the Project

Join us in a cutting-edge project: "The Infectome of Dairy Calves in NSW", where you will work with an interdisciplinary team of experts from the University of Technology Sydney, microbial genomics specialists, and the Department of Primary Industries. This project aims to uncover the diverse community of bacteria, viruses, and eukaryotic organisms that infect dairy cattle and contribute to improve diagnostics, and animal disease control.

As a PhD student, you will have the chance to perform a variety of exciting and challenging tasks, starting with sampling at dairy farms, microbiology wet lab, metagenomics sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. This comprehensive study will provide you with valuable skills and experience, and the opportunity to make a real impact on our understanding of infectious diseases in dairy cattle.

Eligibility

Applicants can be International or domestic student (either permanent Australian residents or New Zealand citizens). To be eligible for this applicantion, applicants must have completed a UTS recognised degree in

• MSc Research or MSc Coursework with a research thesis of at least 6 months,

• or Bachelor Honours degree with 1st Class, or 2nd Class Division 1, or division 1 honours, or an equivalent or higher qualification,

• or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate research studies.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration.

Required

  • Academic achievements: The candidate should have excellent academic achievements, including a high grade point average (GPA) and research experience.
  • Research skills: The candidate should have strong research skills, including experience with laboratory techniques, data analysis, and research design.
  • Critical thinking: The candidate should demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills, including the ability to identify research questions, design experiments, and analyze data.
  • Communication skills: The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write research papers, present findings, and work collaboratively with others.
  • Motivation: The candidate should be highly motivated to pursue a PhD in the field of Biological Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Agronomy or a related field, with a clear interest in the research area and a desire to contribute to the field.
  • Collaborative skills: The candidate should be able to work collaboratively with others, including research team members, supervisors, and external partners.

Stipend Value
$32,500 per year and additional funds ($7.5k) during the course of the PhD for PhD-related expenses.
