About the Project

This project aims to explore the relationship between textiles and the language that originates from textiles and permeates into wider usage, as well as the way that wider language affects different areas of textiles. The status of different textile disciplines is intertwined with the language used in the way we discuss, innovate and curate textiles as both historic and evolving areas. This project primarily focuses on the English language.

This project builds on a paper (Glazzard, M., Adholla, C. and Dewey-Findell, T.K., 2023. Knit is a Four-Letter Word. TEXTILE, pp.1-9) which focussed on Knitting and its many linguistic considerations. Future iterations of this research would welcome applicants from different textile areas as well as linguists and social historians.

For informal enquiries about the project, contact Martha Glazzard, [Email Address Removed] please note the supervisors will not be able to provide funding or find funding for prospective students.
