Project Description

The processes regulating star formation in our Galaxy are still not fully understood. Recent observations with the Herschel space observatory indicates that stars form preferentially in the filamentary structure of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) which can be shaped by Galactic magnetic fields. Magnetic fields can also be responsible for the observed inefficiency in forming new stars.
We have a leading role in two instruments to map the polarized FIR emission of dust in star forming regions, a proxy for Galactic magnetic fields:
1) The balloon borne submillimetric polarimeter BLASTPol;
2) the NIKAPol camera operating from the ground at the IRAM telescope. In this project, students will lead aspects of the
instrument characterization concerning the characterization of the detector system and of the polarimeter.
Students will also use data taken with these two facilities to address open science questions in star formation, and will be working alongside the international teams behind these two instruments.
