Project Description

Supervisors: Dr Isabel Orriss and Professor Caroline Wheeler-Jones

Department: Comparative Biomedical Sciences

Vascular calcification is a common consequence of ageing, atherosclerosis, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Clinically, vascular calcification is accepted as a significant risk factor for the development of future adverse cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack. Evidence now suggests that vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) calcification shows some outward similarities to bone mineralisation. However, antioxidants and oxidative stress (which occurs when production of reactive oxygen species exceeds endogenous antioxidant capacity) appear to have differing effects in regulating vascular calcification and bone mineralisation. This studentship will explore the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants in the development of vascular calcification and how they affect physiological bone formation. Specifically the project will examine:
- the effects of oxidative stress and antioxidants in VSMCs and osteoblasts,
- if the level of oxidative stress affects the responses of VSMCs and osteoblasts to different antioxidants.
This pre-clinical research may identify whether specific antioxidants can be used to limit vascular calcification without exerting any detrimental effects on the skeleton.

The studentship will commence at the beginning of October 2016.

Interviews for studentships - will be held on 16th March or in the w/c 21st March 2016 at the RVC’s Camden or Hawkshead Campuses

Funding Notes

This is a three year fully funded studentship. It is open to Home/EU applicants only. International students are welcome to apply but must be able to pay the difference between UK/EU and international tuition fees.

This is a competition studentship.
