Start date of studentship: 1st October 2021
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by the School of Science, Loughborough University to start in October 2021. The project will be based in the Physics Department and will be supervised by Prof. Joseph Betouras and Dr Mark Greenaway.
The research field of the PhD is Condensed Matter theory and the work will focus on theoretical studies of two-dimensional metal chalcogenides. Loughborough University, a leading research institute in condensed matter theory and novel materials. The successful applicant will collaborate with the supervisors, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students in the group on a weekly basis and interact with international and national partners and academic visitors.
Loughborough University is a top-ten rated university in England for research intensity (REF2014). You will benefit from comprehensive support and guidance from our Doctoral College, including tailored careers advice.

The School of Science in October 2019 received Athena SWAN Bronze award. The School actively engages with good practice schemes to ensure that all staff and students have equal opportunity to reach their potential. You can access links to University and School policies on flexible working, maternity/parental leave. The School is also actively involved in the Race Equality Charter, Disability Confident Employer and Stonewall Diversity Champion status.
Full Project Detail:
The aim of the project is to explore Fermi surface deformations and topological changes theoretically and how these influence the physical properties of monolayer and multilayer metal chalcogenides such as InSe or GaSe. The project will combine DFT and k.p calculations and tight-binding models with advanced analytical techniques to investigate (i) whether the systems can be tuned to higher order van Hove singularities and (ii) the effects of interaction. This is a part of an EPSRC award “Designing and exploring new quantum materials based on Fermi surface topological transitions”.

Entry requirements:
Students will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Physics or related subject. We look for an enthusiastic and committed student with excellent mathematical, computational skills. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Theoretical Physics, many-body physics, computational physics. We welcome applications from students with a diverse background.
How to apply:
All applications should be made online at http://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/apply/research/. Under programme name, select Physics
