Project Description

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are neural crest-derived mesenchymal stem cells that are capable of differentiating along various cell lineages. DPSCs are increasingly gaining interest as cell therapy for neuronal tissue regeneration. DPSC may be able to differentiate into neuronal cell types, but accumulating evidence also indicates that DPSCs are effective to provide neuroprotection and nerve repair via paracrine-mediated actions involving a range of secreted neurotrophic growth factors. However, the precise mechanisms by which DPSCs confer their therapeutic benefits have not yet been fully elucidated. This project represents a multidisciplinary research that will examine in further detail the application and role of DPSC and their secretome in neuroprotection and neural repair using specialised in vitro and in vivo models of nerve injury. The PhD study will also investigate optimisation of pre-culture and cell delivery conditions to achieve maximum neurogenic & neurotrophic potential. It is anticipated that this study will contribute to the development of novel stem cell-based therapies for central nervous system and retinal neuronal repair.

At present, we would only consider applications from prospective students with:
- a good biomedical degree, with interests in any of the areas outlined above,
- good command of the English language as outlined in the postgraduate prospectus,
- a source of funding to cover tuition fees and bench fees.
