About the Project

This project seeks to develop simplified mathematical models of the coupling between tidal dissipation, melting and melt segregation, and mantle convection on Jupiter’s moon, Io. This moon is the most volcanically active body in the solar system and is powered almost entirely by tidal dissipation. Funding Notes

There is a single STFC studentship available on the DPhil in Earth Sciences; the subject area would be in Solar and Planetary Science (e.g. Earth Observation). The studentship would be 3 years duration in the first instance, with the possibility of extension to 3.5 years. It includes fees at the home rate, stipend, travel and research funds, and is available to UK and overseas students; the studentship does not cover the difference between the home and overseas fee rates.
Please only apply via https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate. Do not email us your CV.
