Project Description

The Tinkering Research project will investigate learning in tinkering studios that foreground the interdisciplinary synergy amongst mathematics, art, and architecture. Tinkering Studios make available materials, hand and digital tools, samples of prior work, and instructional assistance inviting participants to collaboratively produce shareable artefacts out of their own design and tinkering.

The project’s aims are:

1. To contribute new theoretical frameworks inspired by emerging theories on affect, social serendipity, and the interplay between digital and material media
2. To design and study tinkering media intermingling mathematics, architecture, and art.

The research will include two strands:

1. Ethnography of artists and architects working in their studios
2. Participant observation of activities in specially designed tinkering studios to be used over a number of sessions by different groups of participants.

The project will generate papers of significant potential impact in the fields of research in mathematics education, informal education, museum education, and digital technologies. In addition, it will produce a report for practitioners of tinkering studios and resources for professional development programs aimed at educators, artists, and architects.
