Project Description

A PhD project with Prof. Zhang will focus on the exploration of nontrivial photonic topological states in metamaterials. Topological insulators are materials that are insulating in bulk, but capable of conducting scattering immune currents at their interfaces or edges. A quantized integral of Berry curvature over a closed surface forms the basis for the new class of material system exhibiting topological orders. At the interface between materials of different topological orders, highly robust surface states exist which are immune from scatterers and defects. Over the last several years, topological effects in photonic systems have started to emerge as an exciting research direction in photonics. Thus far photonic topological order has been realized almost exclusively in periodic structures where the specific connection between lattice symmetry and the band structure plays a critical role. This project will focus on robust photonic topological order existing in a metamaterial described by only a few effective electromagnetic parameters. The project involves both numerical simulations and experimental realisation of topological metamaterials at microwave, terahertz and optical frequencies.
