  Toward a theoretical understanding of the relationship between human memory and attention

About the Project

In almost all aspects of our life, we need to keep a small amount of information active in a particular order to successfully navigate daily cognitive tasks (e.g., making a sandwich, having a conservation, driving). Despite centuries of research, the underlying processes of how we learn, maintain, and retrieve information in order are still unclear. In this the current PhD project, a series of cognitive experiments will be conducted to further our understanding of these questions. Depending on your interest, the project can focus on in any of the following:

1)   The relationship between item and order information on human memory: This project will investigate the role of attention between item and order information and the different characteristics of item and order information in learning, maintenance, and retrieval.

2)   The beneficial and detrimental consequences of similarity on human memory: This project will investigate the influence of similarity (e.g., visual, orthographic, phonologic, semantic) on learning, interference, and false memories.

3)   The mental organization of bilingual individuals and the human memory consequence: This project will investigate the mental organization of the languages in bilingual individual and the beneficial and detrimental consequence of having two lexica for learning.

4)   False memories: This project will investigate false memories in short-term memory (order reconstruction, recall, recognition) across a variety of materials (e.g., images, orthographic similar lists, phonologic similar lists, semantic similar lists) in young and older adults.

For all projects you will design experiments and collect data from adults’ participants with the possibility to conduct experiments with children and older adults depending on your interest. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn computational modelling and eye-tracking techniques.

We are looking for a motivated candidate passionate about research and learning new skills. Having experience in experimental psychology and programming skills are an asset but not required.

Home students are UK Nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements (students must have been in the UK for >3 years before start of course).

As only one studentship is available and a very high standard of applications is typically received, the successful applicant is likely to have a very good first degree (a First or Upper Second class BSc Honours or equivalent) and/or be distinguished by having relevant research experience.

Funding Notes

Applications from Home students are welcome. Studentships are awarded on a competitive basis.
The studentship commences in October 2023, covers 3 years tuition fees and maintenance, with submission deadline of 4 years. The 2022/23 full-time maintenance grant was £17,668 p.a. School of Psychology students receive conference and participant money (~£2,250), computer, office space, access to courses and become members of the Doctoral Academy.
