About the Project

The use of sophisticated delivery systems that allow the delivery and targeting of anti-cancer drugs into tumour tissue is an ever expanding area of research. In particular, the use of carbon-based delivery systems (CBDS) such as graphene and carbon nanotubes to deliver anticancer therapeutics has recently attracted a lot of interest. Although the mechanism of action of the anti-cancer drugs that are attached to these delivery systems are well understood, the effect of the nano-based delivery systems on normal and cancer cells is not systematically studied. Hence, in this project we aim to explore the effects of graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) on different types of normal and cancer cells such as A549 (lung), MCF7 (breast), DU145 (prostate) and HCT116 (colorectal) and these will be studied using a range of molecular biology and toxicology techniques.
