Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Project rationale and description: The project will focus on training-induced changes in the cerebral processing of sound in healthy participants as well as participants with mild or moderate hearing loss. We would like the successful candidate to develop a training study on auditory temporal processing and investigate its effects on auditory cortex. The overall aim is to establish the consequences of hearing impairment in the brain and the brain’s ability to change with training.
For this project, the successful candidate will also be supported by the Audiology Department at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which provides assessment and rehabilitation for people with hearing loss across North Wales. The department is renowned for innovation and development for the benefit of patients and received an NHS Wales Award in 2018.
Facilities: Bangor’s School of Psychology was established in 1963 and now has one of the largest student cohorts in the UK and a cosmopolitan feel due to the presence of staff and students from over 20 countries. It has consistently performed exceptionally well in the UK’s annual National Student Survey and is currently ranked in the top 20 in the 2014 REF. The School is exceptionally well equipped and houses its own research-dedicated MRI scanner. Bangor is a friendly and affordable university town, with good transport links, located in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.
Requirements: We are seeking an enthusiastic PhD student with a Master’s degree (e.g. MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience/Neuroimaging, Audiology/Clinical Science, Psychology or other relevant discipline) to meet the technical demands of the project (e.g. MRI scanning, neuroimaging data analysis, sound processing). Undergraduate students with a strong upper second or first class degree are also encouraged to apply given that the ESRC provides the possibility to do a 1+3 (Masters of Research) before starting the PhD. A willingness to learn programming in Matlab, a passion for research, a strong work ethic and good communication skills are essential.
Residency requirements: This studentship is open to UK/EU students only.
