Project Description

Synthetic zeolites are commercially important materials, primarily used as catalysts in a wide range of chemical industries such as petrochemical processes. Zeolites are crystalline, microporous (500 °C). In this project, we aim at developing novel meso-micro-porous zeolites for supporting cost-effective transition metals such as Fe and Cu for low-temperature activation of SCR reactions for NOx abatement from diesel engines, especially at low temperatures (i.e. at T<100 C). The application represents an industrial challenge. Therefore, a careful development of catalyst supports, thus the controllable deposition of transition metals in their porous network, is crucial to enable the success of the goal. The candidate is expected to perform the post-synthetic modification of zeolites (e.g. ZSM-5) to achieve the desired modification of porosity and acidity of the support using our recently patented method, and then perform the controllable metal deposition in the resulting zeolites for the SCR reactions.

For UK/EU applicants: Applicants should have or expect to achieve a first class degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry or Materials Sciences.

For Overseas applicants: Applicants are expected to be graduates (major in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry or Materials Sciences) from top national ranked universities (prefer top 100 world ranked universities) with excellent GPA and strong publications at Masters level.

Funding Notes

• Self-funded/externally funded students are welcome to apply to this project.
• Candidates with strong research background (i.e. track record of high-quality publication in international academic journals) will be recommended for PDS/Dean’s award (competitive basis).
• Chinese candidates with strong research background (i.e. track record of high-quality publication in international academic journals) will be recommended for University of Manchester-China Scholarship Council studentship (UoM-CSC, competitive basis).
UK, EU and Overseas applicants are all eligible. For a potential PDS/Dean’s/UoM-CSC studentship, this project is in competition with other projects for the funding.
