AHRC-funded through the Northern Bridge Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership
This PhD explores metaphors of sewing as repair and post-traumatic healing by bringing together theoretical understandings from trauma theories and the practice of participatory electronic textiles (e-textiles) sewing. We know that collaborative sewing can have wellbeing impacts in post-traumatic settings, and by turning these handcrafted pieces into interactive artefacts, we embed additional meanings into the stitches. Through this we can create multi-layered, interactive trauma-responsive artefacts. Working with Changing Lives’ women’s services, the candidate will collaboratively facilitate an e-textiles project with women who have been touched by the criminal system; empirically explore topics of healing, sewing, and digital technologies; and develop a comprehensive theory of trauma-responsive, collaborative e-textiles design and service delivery.
We are seeking a candidate with experience of working with electronic textiles, participatory design research, or working with communities who have experiences of trauma. They should also have an interest in textiles, participatory stitching, and interdisciplinary ways of working; and should be keen to work at the intersections of practice and theory. Supervision will involve guidance form experts in academic research, craft practice, and trauma-responsive service delivery. Joint activities with Changing Lives will include the co-planning and co-facilitation of a participatory sewing project in Doncaster (though this may be expanded based on the candidate’s own interests). The candidate will also be invited to Changing Lives’ Trauma Pathway Group meetings to learn more about the service and to share updates from the project. This project invites the candidate to take ownership of this project in collaboration with staff at Changing Lives and offers many opportunities for research impact and for sharing findings beyond academia.
Due to the nature of this project, requiring the candidate to work in a women-only space, we are not able to offer this studentship to candidates who are men. We do want to make clear though that we welcome applications from trans women and non-binary people, and particularly want to invite women with experiences of trauma, the criminal justice system, or other forms of oppression to apply.
