Project Description

The University of Nottingham is a world leader in aerospace R&D. With a research income which exceeds £120M per Year, the Engineering Research Power of the University currently ranks 4th in the UK. The Faculty of Engineering is ranked in the top 5 out of 85 engineering departments in the UK in the last Research Assessment Exercise, with most of its research output classified as world leading or internationally excellent in quality. It provides state-of-the art experimental and computational facilities and attracts leading scholars from around the world, many of whom are leaders in their fields.

Description of the post
Modern aeronautical structures are increasingly made of composite layered materials due to their well-known benefits. The usage of composite structures however implies a greater range of possible structural damage modes for which the structure has to be frequently and thoroughly inspected. D-type maintenance check costs can be as high as £5M suggesting that operators oftentimes prefer scrapping the aircraft instead of inspecting it. The use of scheduled inspection techniques currently leads to a massive reduction of the vehicle’s availability and significant financial losses for the operator. This PhD project will deliver a state-of-the-art, ultrasound propagation and wave interaction schemes for damage diagnosis and failure prognosis in complex composite structures therefore facilitate the transition to condition-based maintenance for aviation’s 21st century.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship (3 years) within the Composites Group and the Institute for Aerospace Technologies of the University of Nottingham. The project will be completed in collaboration with a major European aerospace company and the PhD candidate will have the opportunity to interact with leading industrial experts in the field.

The studentship includes fees and a tax-free stipend of £14,777 per annum. An additional £2000 a year may be awarded for students with a 1st class degree/MSc Distinction from a UK Russell Group University or equivalent. Please note that due to funding restrictions, current funding is available to UK/EU nationals only.

The PhD candidate will be expected to make significant contributions to the development of modelling tools and experimental verification related to the dynamic response and wave propagation properties of composite metamaterials. The successful applicant should:

i) be in possession of (or be expecting to obtain) a first-class or a 2:1 degree in engineering, applied mathematics or a relevant discipline and
ii) have a sound background in numerical modelling and/or dynamics of solids.
