Prof S vanGoozen, Dr K Langley, Dr Amy Paine  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

About the Project

Applications are invited for a highly motivated, enthusiastic psychologist with an interest in developmental psychopathology to join the well-supported Neurodevelopment Assessment Unit and its team (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/neurodevelopment-assessment-unit) at Cardiff University. The NDAU studies 4-7 years-old children who are referred by their schools for emerging emotional, cognitive and behavioural problems, using an RDoC informed neurodevelopmental assessment approach. The PhD student will develop their own research interests in consultation with their supervisors and by making use of the ongoing data collection in the NDAU. They will be responsible for (a) undertaking emotional, cognitive, and physiological assessments of children and their parents in our dedicated laboratory based in the Centre for Human Developmental Science (training provided), (b) data analysis and writing papers, and (c) liaising with educational psychologists and schoolteachers.

Requirements:

Applicants must have excellent organisational, communication and research skills and an ability to successfully work as part of a team, that includes psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical and educational psychologists.

To be competitive, you will have a first class/good upper second degree, or a distinction/merit at masters’ level, in a relevant subject, with a good knowledge of developmental psychopathology. You will need to prove your ability to carry out research in children with emotional, cognitive, and behavioural problems. You will be able to learn fast, understand complex problems and apply practical solutions.

The studentship will commence in October 2023 and will cover your tuition fees (at UK level) as well as a maintenance grant. In 2022/23 the maintenance grant for full-time students was £17,668 per annum. As well as tuition fees and a maintenance grant, all School of Psychology students receive access to courses offered by the University’s Doctoral Academy and become members of the University Doctoral Academy.

As only one studentship is available and a very high standard of applications is typically received, the successful applicant is likely to have a very good first degree (a First or Upper Second class BSc Honours or equivalent) and/or be distinguished by having relevant research experience.

You can apply online - consideration is automatic on applying for a PhD in Psychology, with an October 2023 start date (programme code RFPDPSYA).
