Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
Applications are invited for a full time PhD (via MPhil) studentship in the Media Innovation Studio, School of Journalism, Media and Communication. The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years full-time [subject to satisfactory progress] and will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference between the UK/EU and International tuition fee rate.
It is expected the successful applicant will commence 1 April 2019.
Journalism organisations are searching for new ways to tell stories, reach their audiences, create new experiences and generate income. To do this, they are creating new ways to innovate through novel structures, working practices, or creative collaborations. Increasingly, legacy media organisations are creating “Labs” to house this innovation work.
The Media Labs and Journalism Innovation PhD programme aims to understand how media organisations, start-ups and technology firms work together to prompt innovation and change within and beyond journalism. The project will explore and critically analyse innovation labs globally to help gain a broader understanding of media ecosystems, innovation processes, the actors involved and how ‘innovation’ is created and realised (if at all).
Working with a supervisory team from UCLan’s Media Innovation Studio and the Paris-based Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI) at the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, the project will ‘map’ how media innovation labs operate, what they’re goals, structures and motivations are and critically analyse the resulting data. The partnership will enable the student to connect with innovators globally and reach a deeper understanding of the future of journalism. In addition to academic outputs, the partnership with GAMI will enable the successful student to contribute to industry reports and other outputs.
The project will involve some international travel.
Candidates should have (or expect to have been formally awarded by the start date) a good Master’s degree in a relevant academic area (or equivalent qualification) and also a UK Bachelor honours degree at minimum 2:1 level (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant field
EU and International applicants require an English Language level of UKVI IELTS 6.5 (no subscore less than 6.0 (or acceptable UCLan equivalent qualification).
