About the Project

Background

Prejudice and discrimination are pressing social problems. We seek to understand the ways in which human psychology contributes to systemic discrimination. A commonly held view within social psychology is that outgroups are often dehumanised and that, as a result, they are vulnerable to harm. Recently this view has been critiqued and it has been suggested that apparent evidence for dehumanisation from lab-based studies might be better explained by ingroup preference and stereotyping.

Aims of the PhD project

The successful applicant will work on studies examining theories of dehumanisation against alternative intergroup processes. The project will initially involve conducting online experiments through testing platforms such as Gorilla, Qualtrics and Prolific. There could be opportunities for lab-based testing in the future including with children.
