Unsteady Turbulent Flow in Turbomachinery

   Department of Mechanical Engineering

Applications accepted all year round  Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

This project is aimed at developing better modelling methodologies for turbomachinery by extending a new transient-flow-transition theory that has been developed recently within our research group (See J. Fluid Mech., He & Seddighi, 2013 & 2015).

The radically new concept that greatly deviates from the conventional theory of turbulence redefines the turbulent transient flow to be a laminar-turbulent bypass transition.

The purpose of this project is to apply this new understanding to the analysis of flows in turbomachinery where unsteadiness and streamwise pressure gradient are dominant phenomena.

The project will contribute to numerical method development as well as new understanding of flow physics and will make use of high performance computing (HPC) and advanced computational fluid dynamics – direct numerical simulation (DNS).
