Highly capable graduates, with strong mathematical and feedback control systems capabilities, wishing to read for a PhD degree in Control Systems with Prof. A. Lanzon https://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/staff/Alexander.Lanzon/ are encouraged to contact him via email [Email Address Removed] in the first instance, sending him their CV and their detailed transcripts of all previous and current university studies.
Prof. Lanzon is interested in supervising PhD students in the following Control Theory topics:
- mathematical systems theory foundations of feedback control theory,
- negative imaginary control systems theory,
- robust nonlinear control theory via input-output methods.
The theory of negative imaginary control systems was pioneered in Manchester in 2008 by Prof Lanzon, and he also contributed to many of its seminal results. It is a new control theory that is highly relevant to inertial dynamics and complements nicely passivity theory. Furthermore, examples of robust nonlinear control theory via input-output methods include input-output passivity theory, input-output dissipativity theory, integral quadratic constraint theory, and small-gain theory.
PhD scholarships are available at the University of Manchester for both UK and international students via a highly competitive application process. A list of PhD scholarships is provided at https://www.se.manchester.ac.uk/phds-science-engineering/funding/ wherein you can read about the corresponding eligibility criteria. PhD applications must be received sufficiently early to meet the deadlines of many of these scholarships. If a prospective PhD student has their own funds (e.g. private or a government scholarship) to cover all the costs of their PhD studies, it is highly advisable to explicitly state this when you initially contact Prof. Lanzon as competition is fierce for students who seek scholarship support in addition to PhD admission.
After initial preliminary email contact with Prof. Lanzon, strong candidates will be encouraged to submit a formal PhD application form
Eligibility
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a first-class honours undergraduate degree and a Masters' degree at distinction level (or their international equivalent) with a strong mathematical and control systems content in a science or engineering discipline.
Funding
At Manchester we offer a range of scholarships, studentships and awards at university, faculty and department level, to support both UK and overseas postgraduate researchers applying for competition and self-funded projects.
For more information, visit our funding page or search our funding database for specific scholarships, studentships and awards you may be eligible for.
Before you apply
We strongly recommend that you contact the supervisor, Prof A Lanzon, for this project before you apply via email [Email Address Removed] sending him your CV and your detailed transcripts of all your previous and current university studies.
How to apply
Apply online through our website: https://uom.link/pgr-apply-fap
When applying, you’ll need to specify the full name of this project, the name of your supervisor, if you already having funding or if you wish to be considered for available funding through the university, details of your previous study, and names and contact details of two referees.
Your application will not be processed without all of the required documents submitted at the time of application, and we cannot accept responsibility for late or missed deadlines. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
After you have applied you will be asked to upload the following supporting documents:
- Final Transcript and certificates of all awarded university level qualifications
