Research Question: The objective of the project is to investigate whether a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach, embedded in the industrial metaverse, can (i) significantly reduce design turnaround time and (ii) improve ethics and sustainability in the design process. The industrial metaverse provides an extended reality environment for seamless collaboration in an immersive photorealistic environment, bringing together all stakeholders in an engineering project. In the process of investigating this approach, the student will also explore the implementation challenges of integrating tools to solve engineering optimization and simulation problems.
Admissions Qualifications:
1. Candidates must meet the entry requirement at both institution
IISc leading projects:
a. Candidates must have successfully completed the required coursework and comprehensive examination within 24 months of enrolment/joining at IISc with a minimum CGPA of 8.0/10;
b. Candidates must be able to enrol in the Joint PhD Award at IISc from August 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter with no requirement for a (further) visa to study in India.
UoM leading projects:
c. Hold (or expect to achieve) a First Class or 2:1 UK honours degree (or international equivalent).
d. Ideally hold a master’s-level qualification at merit or distinction (or international equivalent).
e. Demonstrable excellent communication skills, including in English language, a proficiency in which should be demonstrably indicated by meeting the requirements as indicated on https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/international/admissions/language-requirements and in particular securing an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component OR securing a TOEFL iBT score of 90 with no less than 20 in each component equivalent OR equivalent. Project supervisor teams may recommend a candidate who has excellent English language skills but otherwise has not formal certification of such. Please note that a timely demonstrable minimum English language level is a requirement of the UK home office for the issue of student visas to the UK. For some projects an ATAS certificate may also be required by them.
2. Willingness to travel to the partner institution to undertake 2 years of study if such travel is permitted by UK and India governments
3. Demonstrable suitability of academic background for the proposed project
4. Demonstrable skills in team-working and self-organisation
