A PhD studentship is available at the UCL Ear Institute as part of the EPSRC Doctoral Training Programme.
The student will work with Prof Nicholas Lesica (lesicalab.com) to build computational models of auditory processing that can be used to investigate how different cochlear pathologies distort the neural coding of speech and music, with access to unique datasets that we have collected using our novel methods for large-scale electrophysiology (see Armstrong et al., Nat Biomed Eng, 2021).
The student will benefit from extensive research and training resources at UCL. The Ear Institute is one of the world’s largest integrated hearing research centers, bringing scientists, clinicians, and patients together in a collective effort to improve our understanding of hearing and treatment of hearing loss. The broader neuroscience community at UCL and its affiliates is also one of the largest in the world and provides numerous opportunities for synergy and collaboration. Further information on graduate study at UCL can be found at ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/why-choose-ucl.
The studentship is available for four years starting from September/October 2022 and includes a tax-free stipend (£19,062 per annum for 2022/23, increasing in future years), tuition fees (including potential support for overseas fees), and research project costs.
The ideal candidate will have experience with computational, statistical, or machine learning methods for modeling time series and/or analyzing large-scale datasets. Strong programming and quantitative skills are essential. Experience with music, audio, hearing, and/or neuroscience is desirable but not required. Applications from both UK and international students are welcome.
Applications will be accepted until June 10, 2022. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews to be held during the second half of June. Applications should be submitted via the main UCL application site www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/apply with the following choices:
Department: Ear Institute (29)
Programme type: Postgraduate Research
Full time, part time, etc: Full-time
Start year: 2022/23
Programme code: RRDEINSING01
