Vibration analysis of Non-Metallic Materials
Sponsored by AWE and Cranfield University. This studentship will provide a bursary of up to £15000 pa*. In addition the studentship will also cover the tuition.
The objective is to develop an accurate measurement method for the vibration properties of non-metallic materials. The project will be a laboratory based experimental project. This is an opportunity to develop new methods in an important but little explored area.
Non-metallic materials, for example glues, plastics and composites are often used in engineering assemblies. This is a challenge for computer simulations because the properties of such materials are often not well known and this leads to uncertainty when they are ignored or approximated. An added complication for vibration analysis is that the material properties can be different at different frequencies. Despite this disadvantage non-metallic materials often have favourable properties such as absorbing unwanted vibrational energy. The typical material properties that will be measured are stiffness and damping as a function of frequency and temperature. A new measurement device will be designed and built to capture these properties.
