The aim of this project is to develop an immersive human-robot collaboration testing environment using virtual reality tools, such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and VR CAVEs. The project will investigate human reactions to robot movements and how these can be used to modify the behaviour of the robot. For example, the reaction of users can inform the direction, speed and acceleration of movement of the actual industrial robot arm. The theme will investigate multiple sensory feedback (e.g. motion, audio, haptic, etc).
These will support the technology developments and research projects carried out under the EPSRC High Value Manufacturing Catapult Fellowship held at the University of Sheffield. This project theme will involve close collaboration with High Value Manufacturing Catapult, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). The industrial-scale robotic and manufacturing facilities at the MTC will be available for undertaking projects in this theme.
