Cardiff University School of Social Sciences, supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales (Wales DTP), invites applications for PhD study. These ‘collaborative studentships’, involve liaison with a non-academic organisation, often at many key stages of the research programme. They commence in October 2020.

While previous research has explored practitioners’ perspectives of language immersion provision for learners whose first exposure to the Welsh language occurs at a stage during/after Year 1 (Burrowes et al. 2011), the teaching methodologies used and how this provision affects students’ Welsh language competencies (Estyn 2018); this research fills the void by exploring the impact Welsh language immersion units have on learners’ attitudes towards Welsh and use of Welsh as well as parents’ attitudes towards these units. It is anticipated that the researcher of this project will collect data at the start and at the end of learners’ time in immersion units, given that children spend up to a term in these units. Questionnaires could be distributed to learners in immersion units across Wales and their parents. The project could also focus on particular immersion units (approximately 3-4 immersion units). Units chosen could differ in relation to the delivery and duration of the provision and vary in terms of the numbers of Welsh speakers and use of Welsh in the area. Case studies could involve complementary, participatory methods, including interviews with students and parents and observations of the learning activities undertaken in the unit. Fluency in Welsh Language is essential
