Wasted food, poor health, sad planet: optimising householders’ food behaviour for health outcomes, food security and resource efficiency

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2020/21 Academic Year.

This project provides an exciting opportunity to address urgent issues in public health and environmental science, though a unique collaboration with local government. The successful candidate in this role will lead a mixed-methods study to identify what influences food purchasing behaviours in households, and any food waste, to understand where efforts to reduce food waste and/or improve household food security should be focused. Crucially you will explore the variation within populations to understand the relationship with health inequalities. The final output will be a co-developed tool to model future household food security and food waste, given a range of scenarios.

Skills Required

This project will used mixed methods, with some qualitative skills required to facilitate interviews and/or focus groups then quantitative skills to complete simple statistical modelling in the third research question. Confidence in written communication and knowledge or willingness to learn about behaviour change models will be beneficial. The intention is for this project to be completed in the three paper format.
