Project Details

Do you believe that community-led action is the key to transforming lives and places?

Do you want to work with an organisation that is committed to helping communities achieve their priorities?

Do you want to build evidence on how community-led action can achieve long-term change?

Understanding the legacies of community-led regeneration

This collaborative PhD opportunity, fully funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has been developed in collaboration with our partner, Local Trust to explore the long-term impacts of community-led regeneration. Local Trust was established in 2012 to deliver an innovative community-led programme, Big Local.  In the Big Local programme, communities are in charge of deciding how to spend £1.15 million based on what they think that their area needs. The PhD will make an important contribution to the legacy of Big Local in building evidence on its impact.

The PhD will explore the extent and nature of community capacity in areas which have benefitted from investment in resident-led interventions and identify the factors influencing the endurance of community-based development. It is anticipated that the research will use both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The successful applicant will be supported to identify a proposed area of focus and appropriate methodology for the study based on their own skills, experience and academic interests.

A collaborative PhD provides an exciting opportunity for doctoral researchers to work outside academia and for their research to have a direct impact on the partner organisation and the wider community. Collaborative arrangements also facilitate access to a wider range of resources, knowledge and expertise than might otherwise be possible.

Through this partnership you will have access to unique data sets, drawn from evaluations of two major community regeneration initiatives: Big Local and the New Deal for Communities, enabling a comparative analysis of outcomes across the programmes. You will also be supported by Local Trust and Sheffield Hallam to identify case studies in regeneration communities, in which you will conduct qualitative research.

Where will you study?

You will study at the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University. CRESR is one of the UK’s leading policy research centres. We have a strong commitment to academically rigorous applied policy research, providing a particularly enriching environment for doctoral scholars. As a research student at CRESR you will join a lively research community offering the best possible support and training, working alongside a team of around 30 staff and 20 doctoral students.

CRESR is a key centre in the Social and Economic Research Institute which provides support to over 400 doctoral students in the social sciences at Sheffield Hallam. We work in partnership with organisations in the public, private and third sectors to engage doctoral students with social challenges such as inclusive economic growth, social mobility, health inequalities and sustainable futures.

The studentship is accredited through the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership. Through the White Rose DTP you will have access to cutting edge research training in the social sciences and a community of peers in the universities of Bradford, Leeds, Hull, Manchester Metropolitan, Sheffield and York.
