About the Project

Full Project Detail:

Fully funded PhD studentship on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in higher education

Loughborough University – School of Business and Economics

This PhD studentship is available to UK/Home Fee applicants only.

We are inviting applications from highly motivated and talented graduates for a full-time three-year (or part time pro rata) PhD studentship to undertake a research project on knowledge production and emotional labour in higher education EDI work. The studentship is funded through the Mini-Centre for Doctoral Training (Mini-CDT) ‘Unequal academic citizenship: opportunities and barriers to participation and inclusion of cultural diversity and intersecting identities in higher education (CITHEI)’, which will host six PhD projects in total. All projects examine opportunities and barriers for university students, staff and alumni to develop their full potential.

This project will involve an organisational ethnography of EDI work in British higher education. The project will investigate the production of what constitutes ‘EDI knowledge’ and which activities and types of knowledge achieve recognition and status. The research will explore how EDI work shapes processes, regulations and practices involved in everyday university life, as well as external gender and race equality charters. It will analyse EDI work as part of a wider ethics of care and emotional labour undertaken by students and staff in British universities.

We will support our PhD student in their project through an induction process, regular research meetings with the supervisory team, tailored career advice and training on subject-specific, transferable, technical and industry relevant skills such as drafting publications and communicating research findings. The PhD student will be expected to participate actively in the community of doctoral scholars, and there will be opportunities to travel nationally and/or internationally to attend conferences.

We actively encourage applications from women, disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates, who can bring their experiences and voices to the studentship and the Mini-CDT.
