Plasma-based gas conversion into value-added chemicals

Plasmas are promising technology for the conversion of gases such as CO2, CH4 or N2 into more valuable ones, e.g. CO (starting material for alcohols and hydrocarbons), H2 (clean fuel applications) and NH3 (fertilisers). Read more

Exploring the Time-Dependence of Kinetic Structure at Earth’s Bow Shock

Supervisory Team:  Imogen Gingell. Project description. When the solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere, it is heated and slowed from supersonic to subsonic speeds at the bow shock. Read more

Funded PhD studentship in XFEL Science at Imperial College London

A fully funded 4-year PhD position is available in the group of Professor Jasper van Thor at Imperial College London. The PhD is supported by the STFC UK Hub for the physical sciences on XFELs (HPSX) and Imperial College. Read more

Identification and classification of coherent flow structures in the plasma of the Sun’s photosphere

The Sun is a star with a cyclic magnetic activity that can impact all the solar system. Thus, the solar magnetic field can interact with the Earth's magnetic field, permitting the entrance of energetic particles in the upper atmosphere, affecting technological devices, telecommunications and human health. Modelling charged-particle transport and heating in fusion plasmas

The project will investigate a very important aspect of inertial confinement fusion. the internal heating by fusion products. Recently, inertial confinement fusion has made considerable progress reaching the stage of substantial internal heating and later positive energy outcome (ignition) in several experiments. Read more
